HISTORY OF THE MONASTERY

The question of the age of the Savina monastery has not been answered with certainty, nor can it be reliably stated who founded it. According to tradition, the small church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos originates from the year 1030, and it is quite certain that this is how it looked when it was built in the 15th century, as well as the church of St. Sava, for which the tradition says that the foundation was sanctified by Saint Sava in the 13th century.

In its millennial history, the monastery remained several times empty and rebuilt. The most significant reconstruction happened at the end of the 17th century when monks from the destroyed Tvrdoš monastery of Herzegovina, headed by Bishop Savatije Ljubibraticem, were settled in Savina. This great reconstruction begins a new monastery life that will reach its peak in the second half of the 18th century.
